Anti-Obesity Campaign is Harming Children
First 5, California government’s anti-obesity program states the following as its mission: to nurture and protect our most precious resource–our children.
How can they claim this when this photo-shopped ad clearly makes a mockery of obese children? This ad is meant to bring up feelings of shame and fear regarding obesity. Does First 5 think it is “nurturing ” to have children obese children growing up with a sense of self-hatred and shame? Is it “protective” for children to get more negative messages about overweight children that can feed into the rampant bullying that already exists for these kids?
First 5’s defense was that at least people are talking about obesity now. Really? That justifies the harm that is being done? These types of ads have not even been shown to reduce obesity, and we can clearly see the harm.
SO TAKE THESE ADS DOWN FIRST 5. THEY HURT AND THEY DON’T HELP.
