Comment on the DSM-V and Eating Disorders
The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has completed a proposed framework for the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). According to the APA, “The chapters are arranged by general categories such as neurodevelopmental, emotional and somatic to reflect the potential commonalities in etiology within larger disorder groups.” Among changes to the structure of the DSM-V, those responsible for the Eating Disorder section have proposed that Binge Eating Disorder be given a free-standing diagnosis as its own disorder. Additionally, it has been recommended that the Eating Disorders section be renamed “Feeding and Eating Disorders” in order to include feeding disorders.
The APA invites the public to comment through June 15 on both the structure of the DSM-V and revisions to specific sections. To view either of these and comment, please visit www.dsm5.org.
